Throne of Glass: Story Overview
The Throne of Glass series is eight books long (including the prequel collection) and people sure do love to talk about Celaena Sardothien’s romps through kingdoms, dark powers, ancient secrets. It is primarily the story of Celaena Sardothien, an 18-year-old assassin that begins the series in Endovier salt mines.
She gets an offer of redemption instead when Crown Prince Dorian Havilliard summon her to take part in a dangerous competition called Contest Of Champions, where she would be required to compete with twenty three other thieves and killers for the title of King’s Champion (a personal assassin for his father,King of Adarlan). The deal — she goes free after four years if wins.
As Celaena competes against thieves, warriors, and assassins in the royal court, strange and deadly things start happening. Competitors are mysteriously murdered, and dark forces seem to be at work within the castle. With the help of Dorian and his best friend, Captain of the Guard Chaol Westfall, Celaena begins to uncover a deep and ancient evil lurking in the kingdom.
Throughout the series, Celaena is revealed to be far more than she seems. Not only is she a fearsome assassin, but her true identity as Aelin Ashryver Galathynius, the lost queen of the kingdom of Terrasen, comes to light. Her journey transforms from that of a survivor fighting for freedom to a powerful queen fighting to reclaim her kingdom and overthrow the tyrannical rule of Adarlan.
PlotSubsequent books expand on Aelin’s story, as well her intricate alliances with different kingdoms being forged and ancient magical forces returning to the world, alongside an ever-growing menace from a dark dimension called Valg. This monstrous species, commanded by the dark king Erawan, is intent on taking over every mortal kingdom in sight and only Aelin can bring together all armies to kill each separately.

Throne of Glass is set in a sprawling world dense with kingdoms, cultures, and magic systems. Leading up the charge are kingdoms such as Adarlan, Terrasen and Wendlyn as well as a southern continent with an interesting take on life called Antica. Themes
Such themes in Throne of Glass include freedom, loyalty and sacrifice; the sheer weight that leadership carries. Especially for Aelin, this journey centralizes around the conflicted notions of power and what it means to be responsible. She has impossible choices to make because her decisions could mean life or death for thousands. The series is also very heavily focused on friendship, love and the idea of a found family. All the characters are connected deeper than blood.
The show also dives into the consequences and corruption of power as well as holding tyranny accountable. The series often explores the dangers of unregulated authority, as seen through various rulers and citizens in Adarlan. Other themes we see in Heir of Fire are identity, or as they say: who you are is what breaks through the glass between your soul and heart; something Aelin fights with most on her quest to find herself again.
